Today’s Church: Leading in the Face of Adaptive Challenges;
Embracing Becoming Adaptive Cultures
Is church adapting to the changes both from within and from the outside? Is adapting what the church needs to learn to do better? That’s not to say that the church needs to be a doormat for any of the latest fads and ideas. Paul wrote to churches throughout the Middle East teaching, reminding, and exhorting them to not fall prey to false teachings (for instance, take a quick look at Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and Hebrews 13). Adapting to change, however, is horse of another color.
If the church is to grow and become more vital and vibrant, we will need to learn again how to ask the tough questions of one another, be willing to hear multiple interpretations to ideas and issues, and become willing to experiment with new ways of being and acting. Even as we risk hearing and seeing how our values, beliefs, and loyalties are different, our trust for one another will grow.
Becoming adaptive requires that we have leaders who understand two things:
We are all leaders, and Leadership is an activity.
Leadership is not a position, but it is the action that any of us can take at anytime, in any place. But we will all need to build, strengthen, and sharpen our leadership skills – skills like how we engage one another, how we communicate, and how to partner and collaborate.
